Our Mentors include:
- Anita lyer - PhD, Senior Scientist, Oncology IVD Development at Illumina
Dr. Anita lyer is a Senior Scientist in the Clinical Genomics group at Illumina. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Music from Scripps College, and PhD in Human Genetics from UCLA. Starting out as a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD in the Department of Reproductive Medicine, Anita joined Illumina in 2011 and lead the core team for the first FDA-approved NGS in vitro companion diagnostic (evaluating RAS mutations in colorectal cancer) to determine patient eligibility for treatment with Vectibix®.
- Barbara Preston - PhD, Senior Executive Recruiter at PharmaScouts Inc.
Dr. Barbara Preston is co-founder of PharmaScouts, a scientific recruitment firm specializing in the biomedical field. Dr. Preston made the transition to her present role as scientific "talent scout" after many years as a research scientist, including training at NIH and as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UCSD. She belongs to numerous scientific organizations, has served as Vice President and board member for San Diego's AWIS chapter, and is on the Board of ECTLC, a faith-based nonprofit overcoming homelessness in the county.
- Kristina Henthorn - PhD, Manager of Assay Development at GenMark Diagnostics
Kristina currently leads a team in the Product Technical Support group at GenMark Diagnostics in Carlsbad, and previously supported the launch of the company's first assay for their ePlex® system. Kristina received her Ph.D. in developmental biology and neuroscience from the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany in 2000, and pursued her postdoc at UCSD, focusing on the role of axonal transport in maintaining neuronal polarity, and Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) function by RNA interference. In 2008 Kristina became Principal Scientist at RGo Bioscience, investigating siRNA/peptide nanoparticle delivery technologies. She gained further experience at RetroVirox Inc, developing anti-viral cell-based assays before moving into the exciting field of Molecular Diagnostics.
- Leslie Crews- PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Regenerative Medicine, UCSD
Leslie Crews is a third-generation native San Diegan and scientist with a passion for stem cell biology. She received her undergraduate degree from UCLA, and PhD from UCSD. As an Assistant Professor in the Division of Regenerative Medicine at UC San Diego, her research focuses on molecular mechanisms that cause tissue-specific stem cells to behave abnormally in age-related degenerative and malignant disorders. She has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed research articles in the fields of neuroscience, hematology, ophthalmology, and cancer. Leslie joined AWIS SD in 2010 and has been a Strategy Sessions committee member since 2013, and a board member since 2017. Leslie also enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, creative writing, and Scottish Highland dancing.
- Meital Mazor - PhD, VP of Pre-Clinical and Clinical Affairs
Dr. Meital Mazor holds a PhD in medical sciences and MBA, both from the Technion, Israel. She has over 15 years of experience conducting clinical research, and 10 years of experience leading several different cardiovascular medical devices from pre-clinical and clinical stages to the market while having a key role in developing the technologies and procedures
Dr. Michelle Kem began working with Dermala, a small microbiome based dermatology company, at its inception in early 2015 after finishing her PhD. She started as a scientist and transitioned to becoming the Director of technical Operations, where she assisted in raising capital and harnessing industry and academic collaborations. She likes the fast-paced environment of working in a small start-up where everyday brings a new challenge that constantly pushes you out of your conform zone and allows you to build new skills.
- Miriam Cohen - PhD, Medical writer at Arbor Scientia
Dr. Miriam Cohen earned a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, in 2005. She joined the Glycobiology Research and Training Center at UCSD as a postdoctoral fellow in 2005, and was promoted to Assistant Project Scientist. In 2016 Dr. Cohen accepted a medical writing position at Arbor Scientia, where she develops interactive teaching modules for physicians and health care providers as education on new pharmaceutical drugs and disease mechanism. Dr. Cohen volunteers for the Corporate Sponsorship committee of AWIS-SD, and is the leader of a Girl Scout troop "Daisies in STEM".
- Teresa Henry - PhD, Director of CMC at Sequoia Consulting
Teresa is an experienced laboratory manager and quality professional. She strives to build strong brands by encouraging science based R&D and employee development, with an eye to future plans and regulatory compliance.
