AWIS CHAPTERS & AFFILIATES

AWIS CHAPTERS & AFFILIATES

Our impact on the success of women in STEM began locally decades ago and continues today with 80 volunteer-led grassroots groups globally.

Chapters and Affiliates

By joining an AWIS Chapter or Affiliate, members have opportunities to advance their careers through professional development, mentoring, information sharing, outreach and professional networking in formal and informal social settings.

AWIS Chapters

AWIS Chapters extend the reach and effectiveness of our collective advocacy efforts on behalf of women in STEM. Chapters are robust, multidisciplinary communities that bring together stakeholders from a wide range of employment sectors, scientific disciplines, and career stages. Their activities can vary greatly based on the leadership and community they serve. By joining a Chapter, members have opportunities to advance their careers through professional development, mentoring, information sharing, outreach and professional networking in formal and informal social settings.

AWIS Affiliates

AWIS Affiliates extend the reach and effectiveness of our collective advocacy efforts on behalf of women in STEM. Affiliates are grassroots and agile. Their activity may be centered at one campus or location, or they may be a seed group for a chapter in a larger community. Their activities can vary greatly based on the leadership and community they serve. However, like Chapters, Affiliates bring together professionals and students across all disciplines, career stages, and employment sectors. By joining an Affiliate, members have opportunities to advance their careers through information sharing, outreach and professional networking in formal and informal social settings.

Our Chapters & Affiliates:

  • Ensure inclusive participation, networking, and collaboration of STEM professionals across disciplines, career stages, and work sectors in our community.
  • Advance the vision and mission of the AWIS community in their area.
  • Act as allies for one another to accelerate our member’s success in the workforce.
  • Provide one another with rich professional development opportunities that grow our skills, knowledge, and abilities.

STARTING AN AWIS AFFILIATE GROUP

AWIS National and the Chapters and Affiliates Committee recommend that all groups start as Affiliates. This will enable the group to initiate activities with the support of AWIS while recruiting people interested in joining the organization. Collect a nucleus of people interested in the group and have them join AWIS at the junior level or above. The AWIS National Office can provide you with a list of people in your area that are already members. Select two individuals to be the Points of Contact (POC) for communicating with AWIS National. Decide on a group name, usually related to the location (city, state, or region).
